PMHNP (Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner)
A PMHNP is an advanced-practice registered nurse who can assess, diagnose, and — in most states — prescribe psychiatric medication.
Scope
PMHNPs focus on the medical side of mental health, including medication management, and some also provide therapy. They are distinct from psychiatrists (physicians) but, like them, can prescribe in most states.
Why it matters when choosing a therapist
If you're considering medication — alone or alongside therapy — a PMHNP or a psychiatrist is the prescriber. A counselor, social worker, or psychologist generally cannot prescribe.
