In-network vs out-of-network

An in-network therapist has a contract with your insurance plan to accept its negotiated rate; an out-of-network therapist does not, so you typically pay more or seek partial reimbursement.

How it works

In-network, you usually owe a copay or coinsurance and the plan pays the rest at the contracted rate. Out-of-network, you generally pay the full fee and may file for partial reimbursement if your plan has out-of-network benefits.

Why it matters when choosing a therapist

Network status drives what you actually pay. Always confirm current benefits with both the provider and your plan — panel participation changes, and a directory should never be treated as a guarantee of coverage.
